What is Myopia
Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is an extremely common refractive eye disorder that causes the distant object to appear blurry and out of focus, while close-up items can be seen clearly. It affects as many as one in three people and can be corrected using eyeglasses or contact lenses. Left unchecked, myopia can worsen over time, increasing the risk of more serious eye problems later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.
What is Myopia Control?
Myopia control is a specialized treatment approach designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness, or myopia, which occurs when the eye grows too long and causes distant objects to appear blurry. By intervening early with myopia control treatments, we can help reduce the progression of myopia and preserve long-term eye health. Regular monitoring and adjustments to treatment are key to ensuring effective management of the condition, helping patients maintain clearer vision and reducing the risk of future eye health issues.
Myopia Control Treatment Options
Myopia control can be effectively managed using two key treatment options: specialty contact lenses, such as MiSight, and atropine eye drops. MiSight contact lenses are designed specifically for children with myopia, using a unique design to not only correct vision but also slow the progression of nearsightedness.
Atropine eye drops are another myopia control option that has been shown to slow the progression of myopia when used consistently. Low doses of atropine are applied to the eyes daily helping prevent the elongation of the eye, a key factor in worsening myopia.
Both treatments are non-invasive and have been proven effective in slowing down the progression of nearsightedness, making them valuable options for children and young adults at risk for high myopia.
